The 4 Part Workshop Series

Join us for a series of four workshops that guide you through the complete process of building with earth—from raw material to finished form.

We begin by excavating and testing clay, then move on to mixing it with natural materials and forming adobe bricks. Next, you'll learn to build earth walls, incorporating elements like glass bottles to create beautiful light-filled features. Finally, you'll explore the finishing touches—earth plastering and decorative relief techniques that bring artistry and character to your structure.

You can book individual workshops or choose a discounted series ticket if you’d like to experience the full journey of earth building. The series ticket allows you to attend one of two date options for each type of workshop—giving you flexibility while ensuring you complete all four stages.

We aim to make these workshops accessible to everyone. Discounted student tickets are available for anyone with a valid student ID. We also offer children’s tickets, and children under 6 can join for free.

PART 3

Plastering with Earth

8th NOVEMBER 2025

22nd NOVEMBER 2025

Unlock one of the most refined and specialist techniques in natural building — the art and science of earth plaster. Far from being just decorative, plaster is the protective skin of a building, determining its durability, breathability, and character.

In this intensive hands-on workshop, you’ll gain practical expertise in:

  • Mix design for performance — how different ratios of clay, sand, fibre, and natural additives influence strength, breathability, and finish.

  • Texturing and layering systems — from rough coats for adhesion to fine surface finishes.

  • Colour theory with earths — mixing natural pigments and clays to achieve rich, lasting tones.

  • Stabilisation and crack prevention — specialist knowledge for long-term resilience in humid climates like Hong Kong.

  • Applications for both restoration and new-builds — ensuring your plaster work is not only beautiful but also structural and sustainable.

Earth plaster is one of the few finishes that is completely non-toxic, low-carbon, and enhances indoor wellbeing. You’ll leave with the ability to design and apply finishes that balance aesthetics, performance, and ecology — skills increasingly in demand as architecture shifts towards regenerative and human-centred design.

PART 4

Earth Wall Art

9th NOVEMBER 2025

23rd NOVEMBER 2025

A creative workshop where earth becomes your canvas. In this immersive session, you’ll discover how raw materials — clay, sand, straw, and fibres — can be shaped into expressive surfaces that merge art, architecture, and wellbeing.

You’ll be guided through techniques used in traditional and contemporary natural building, from sculpting relief patterns to pressing found objects, plants, and tools into wet earth to leave beautiful, lasting impressions. Together, the group will create a large-scale collaborative artwork on a live building site — a rare chance to make something both ephemeral and enduring, as part of a real structure.

What makes this workshop special:

  • Hands-on techniques — learn how to prepare earth for sculpting, create depth with layering, and use natural tools and fibres to form texture and pattern

  • Collaborative process — work as part of a creative team to design and build a shared wall artwork, leaving your mark on a real project

  • Art + architecture crossover — gain insight into how decorative reliefs and surface treatments are integrated into natural buildings around the world

  • Wellness through making — experience the grounding, meditative qualities of working with earth — the cool, pliable textures and slow rhythm of hand-shaping are known to reduce stress and foster mindfulness

  • Sustainability in practice — explore how earth art isn’t just creative, but also climate-friendly: using local, low-impact, regenerative materials that connect us to place

By the end of the session, you’ll leave with a new set of artistic techniques, a richer understanding of natural materials, and the joy of having co-created something bigger than yourself. This is as much about the experience and connection as it is about the final result.

Time: 10am - 4.30pm

Location: Ark Eden, Mui Wo, Lantau Island, Hong Kong

The 2 Part Art Workshop Series

Unlike the previous workshops, which each run for a single day, the Earth Sgraffito workshop will take place over a full two-day weekend.

To make this special workshop more accessible, we’ve introduced a 1-day student ticket option. We understand that some students may want to join but might not be able to commit to both days—so this option is designed to give them the chance to participate and experience part of the workshop.

Each workshop will begin with an introduction to the natural building techniques, followed by a morning and afternoon session. In between, participants will enjoy a freshly made vegetarian buffet lunch and light refreshments are available throughout the day.

Participants will receive a comprehensive information package upon ticket purchase, which will include details on how to get to the site, what to wear, and other essential information.

Earth Sgraffito (2-Day Workshop)

29th NOVEMBER 2025

30th NOVEMBER 2025

Discover the fascinating world of sgraffito, an ancient decorative technique used in clay plastering to create intricate, textured designs by scratching through a layer of material to reveal contrasting colors beneath. This method, originating from Italy, has been used for centuries in architecture and art, offering a unique way to add depth and detail to surfaces.

In this 2-day workshop, you'll learn both the history and the hands-on practice of sgraffito.

Day 1: We begin with an introduction to the history and theory behind sgraffito, exploring its cultural significance and uses throughout time. Then, you'll dive into the practice by collaborating on a large wall design, learning the technique together as you scratch through layers of clay and pigment.

Day 2: On the second day, you'll have the opportunity to design and execute your own personalized sgraffito artwork. We will guide you through the process of creating custom colours from mineral pigments and clay, as well as incorporating natural elements like crushed shells and glass for added texture and vibrancy.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with your own unique sgraffito piece, a deeper understanding of this ancient technique, and the skills to incorporate it into future creative projects.

Time: 10am - 4.30pm

Statement of Intent

The Earth Building Workshop Series, hosted by Bisque-kit in collaboration with Ark Eden and Ania Chorzępa, is a temporary, educational initiative focused on teaching natural building methods in a hands-on and environmentally conscious way.

The project is not commercial in nature and is intended to support environmental education, community engagement, and creativity. All structures built during the workshops are:

  • Non-habitable

  • Constructed using biodegradable, non-toxic, and locally sourced materials

  • Lightweight and temporary in nature

  • Not connected to utilities (water, electricity, or sewer)

Any elements constructed during the workshops are either:

  • Naturally decompose after the end of the series.

  • Designed to remain as a temporary art or learning installation under supervision

The goal is to explore sustainable construction techniques while minimizing environmental impact and remaining respectful of existing planning and building regulations.

The team commits to responsible site use, maintaining safety and cleanliness at all times, and keeping communication open with relevant authorities and the local community.

Workshop Safety & Participation Disclaimer

All participants in the Earth Building Workshop Series do so at their own risk. While the activities are designed to be low-risk and suitable for beginners, they involve natural building materials such as clay, sand, straw, bamboo, and tools like trowels or shovels.

By attending, participants acknowledge that:

  • They will follow the instructions of the workshop leaders at all times

  • They understand the nature of the physical activities involved, including manual mixing, lifting, and sculpting with earth materials

  • Children under 16 must be supervised by a parent or designated responsible adult

The organizers will provide basic protective items (e.g. gloves), hydration stations, and shaded areas, but recommend that participants bring appropriate clothing, footwear, and sun protection.

The workshop area will be kept clean and hazard-free to the best of our ability, and the team reserves the right to stop or adjust any activity for safety reasons.
